Tooth Cleaning Cleaning your teeth is just more than a polish of the enamel!
A thorough cleaning consists of two parts: cleaning the teeth and rehabilitating the gums.
Cleaning the teeth is usually the easy part. It is like washing a car and can usually be done in about an hour, unless you have waited longer than a few months and have build-up on the roots. Then, it may take more than one visit.
Rehabilitating the gums is the harder part. In fact, even if your teeth are clean and polished, your gums can still be inflamed and unhealthy!!
Your gums become infected and irritated when there is build-up on the teeth, creating recession, bad breath and even loss of the supporting bone!! We can reverse that process by cleaning the teeth and cleaning the gums in multiple appointments, to get your gums back to health.
It is similar to when your skin gets burned. You can't just put a Band-Aid on it and expect it to heal. You have to wash the wound, change the dressing, and add medicine to help the tissue heal correctly, from underneath to the surface. Gums are similar. We will clean the area, add medicine, and change the dressing (re-clean) multiple times until the skin (gums) heal from underneath (by the root) to the top (by the tooth). Bacteria are always working against us to reverse the healing that follows this therapy. So, follow-up cleanings are critical to maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
