Beautiful Crowns Designed and Delivered in a Day

CEREC (Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic) is a revolutionary digital technology that enables cosmetic dentist Mark Galli to design and deliver customized ceramic restorations in a single appointment. CEREC makes it possible for Encinitas crown and veneer patients to receive beautiful, durable porcelain restorations that fit perfectly and feel great, without spending a lot of time in the dental chair.

How CEREC Works

The CEREC system has several components, including optical imaging, CAD-CAM (computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing) software and a digital milling unit. After capturing optical digital images of a patient’s teeth, Dr. Galli can upload the information into the CEREC computer and create a three-dimensional model of the planned restoration. Then, the specifications of the restoration are sent to the milling machine, which mills the restoration out of a pre-selected block of medical-grade porcelain. Once the restoration is ready, Dr. Galli places it and makes any adjustments as needed. The entire process takes just a few hours, and the patient leaves with a beautiful, new all-porcelain crown.

Is CEREC Right for Me?

CEREC same-day crowns may be suitable for you if you need a new crown or veneer but want to avoid the time-consuming traditional planning and fitting process. Because CEREC crowns are designed and delivered in the same day, there is no delay and no need to wear temporary crowns for the two weeks that it takes for a lab to make a crown. Having fewer dental visits is less invasive, less costly and less of a burden on your schedule.

Your permanent CEREC crown will be made from the finest materials for an excellent fit and feel, and it will match your surrounding teeth. With the proper care, your CEREC crown can last many years.

The best way to determine whether CEREC is right for you is to meet with Dr. Galli to discuss your personal needs and your oral health. Even if you have a history of chronic tooth grinding or clenching, CEREC can still likely be used. Dr. Galli may fit you for a mouth guard to protect your restorations from the wear and pressure of grinding or clenching.

Treatment Details

If it is decided that CEREC is right for you, Dr. Galli will begin treatment by removing tooth decay and broken parts of the tooth or filling. The body of the tooth is smoothed out to create space for the new restoration. Your tooth will be anesthetized so you do not feel any discomfort as this part of the process is being completed. This first step takes about 30 minutes.

Dr. Galli’s team will then take digital images of the tooth to be restored. This information will be transposed onto the computer screen in the CEREC unit, where Dr. Galli has a three-dimensional view of the tooth. He will carefully plan out the restoration to meet your specifications. Together, you will select a color of porcelain that matches your surrounding natural teeth. This step takes about 20 minutes.

Once the design of the restoration is complete, Dr. Galli will program it into the milling unit, which mills the crown. This should take about 12 minutes. When the milling is finished, the preliminary crown form is tried in the mouth to confirm fit, bite and dimensional accuracy. It is then fired in a dental porcelain kiln to finalize the color and strength.

After the new porcelain crown is cooled and polished, Dr. Galli will bond the crown to the tooth using a dental cement that creates a clean, perfect seal around the crown. The bite is checked and modified as needed.

As long as you care for your CEREC crown by brushing and flossing your teeth daily and visiting Dr. Galli at your regular interval for an exam, the crown should last a very long time. Most CEREC crowns have lasted 10 to 20 years.
