Comfortable, Stress-Free Dental Treatment
Experiencing fear or anxiety about dental treatment is incredibly common. Some people avoid the dentist for many years because they struggle with dental phobia. However, without regular dental exams and cleanings, oral health may suffer and eventually require more extensive (and expensive) treatment.
If you have dental anxiety or dental phobia, you have nothing to be ashamed of. Dr. Mark Galli understands this fear very well, and he has tremendous compassion for you. To help you receive the dental care that you need, he can provide a relaxed, stress-free experience using sedation dentistry in Encinitas. These techniques will put you into a comfortable state of “conscious sedation” throughout the duration of treatment, and leave you with little memory of your appointment. For the right patients, sedation dentistry is life changing.
Is Sedation Dentistry Right for Me?
You may be an excellent candidate for sedation dentistry if you:
- Feel fearful or anxious about dental treatment
- Have difficulty getting numb
- Have avoided the dentist for many years because of a previously traumatic experience
- Have limited jaw opening
- Need extensive dental treatment in a short period of time
- Have a sensitive gag reflex
Sedation Dentistry Options
Dr. Galli has been trained and certified by DOCS to provide oral sedation. The oral sedation dentistry method involves Dr. Galli administering a dose of a mild oral sedation medication for you to take at the office prior to dental treatment. The medication will put you into a relaxed and comfortable state like “twilight.” You will remain awake but less aware, less concerned and usually, completely free of discomfort. You will breathe normally and be able to respond to our verbal cues and directions. After your treatment has been completed and the medication wears off, you will have little recollection of the appointment.
If you decide to take oral sedation medication, for your safety you will have someone take you to and from your dental appointment, and there are dietary instructions just like for a medical procedure. You might feel groggy afterward or experience other minor side effects — so going back to work or working from home is not a good idea — but these symptoms wear off by the end of the day. You may resume work the following day.
As a trained sedation dentist, Dr. Galli will consult with you to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for sedation dentistry. He will review your health history, medications and lifestyle factors to rule out any conditions or drugs that could counteract the sedation medication. Then, Dr. Galli will recommend the best technique and dosing for your needs.
