Bright white teeth convey health, youth and beauty. Over time, coffee, tea, red wine, certain foods or medications, and even the natural effects of aging can take their toll on the whiteness and brightness of the teeth. But that is easy to reverse with teeth whitening.

If your teeth have lost their radiance and look stained or dull, professional teeth whitening in Encinitas with Dr. Mark Galli can help. Dentist-supervised whitening is a quicker, safer and more effective cosmetic strategy than using over-the-counter whitening toothpastes or gel strips.

Common Causes of Tooth Stains

Teeth can stain for a variety of reasons. The most common sources of stains include the following:

  • Regular consumption of certain foods and beverages: coffee, tea, red wine, cola, tomato sauce, curry and berries
  • Tobacco use: cigarettes, cigars, pipes, herbs or chewing tobacco
  • Inadequate oral hygiene habits: irregular brushing or flossing habits leave stain-causing substances and plaque
  • Natural effects of aging: older teeth are naturally darker. In addition, as the outer layer of enamel wears away, it reveals darker dentin
  • Physical trauma: an injury to the teeth in childhood or adulthood can lead to discoloration
  • Health conditions: disease that affect the formation of tooth enamel, or treatments like radiation or chemotherapy

Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

You may be a good candidate for teeth whitening, but it is best to consult Dr. Galli prior to starting any treatment. Results can vary depending on the current condition of the teeth, gums and the technique that is used. There may be pre-existing issues that affect the outcome of teeth whitening. These will all be evaluated at your consultation.

Dr. Galli will evaluate you for teeth whitening treatment, discuss your conditions, options for treatment and determine which techniques are most likely to result in the outcome you desire.

Chairside Whitening

Dr. Galli can whiten your teeth with a variety of techniques depending on your needs. The most efficient method is usually chairside whitening, which he performs in his office. This technique can achieve outstanding results in as little as an hour.

Prior to beginning treatment, Dr. Galli will check your teeth and ensure they are healthy with no areas of decay or damage. If he detects any problems, he will treat them before proceeding with whitening treatment. Dr. Galli will also try to identify the source of the staining by asking you questions about your health, lifestyle and dental hygiene habits.

Your teeth will be cleaned and a protective shield will be placed over your gums and lips. Dr. Galli will apply a whitening gel containing hydrogen peroxide to your teeth. After treating the teeth for about 15 minutes, the gel will be removed, the teeth evaluated and usually repeated. The process is usually repeated several times for maximum results.

At-Home Whitening

Another way to brighten dull or discolored teeth is to wear custom-fitted whitening trays at home. Dr. Galli will make personalized and flexible clear trays for you from impressions of your teeth so they are comfortable and secure in your mouth. A mild whitening gel is worn inside the trays for about 30 to 60 minutes a day.

Dr. Galli will provide you with detailed instructions for wearing the trays and returning to his office for follow-up.
